Deaf Man Arrested For Bomb Threat Hoax

VIDEO: Exclusive: Deaf West Virginia man was arrested in Lubbock, Texas for Statue of Liberty bombing hoax in New York City.

NEW YORK POST - A Deaf West Virginia man was arrested in Texas on Wednesday for calling in a fake bomb threat to blow up the Statue of Liberty which forced the evacuation of more than 3,200 people from Liberty Island back in April, authorities said.

Jason Paul Smith, 42, called 911 from his iPad on April 24 and said his name was “Abdul Yasin,” that he was an “ISI terrorist,” and threatened that “we” are preparing to “blow up” the Statue of Liberty, court papers state.

Abdul Yasin is the last remaining fugitive charged with the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, according to court papers.

Smith goes to a school for the Deaf and Blind, and allegedly made the 911 call using a service that lets hearing-impaired people make phone calls.

The iPad registered to Smith made other 911 calls, including two in May 2015 from somebody who identified himself as “Isis allah Bomb maker” and who threatened to attack Times Square and kill police officers at the Brooklyn Bridge, according to the Manhattan US Attorney.

Smith could face up to five years behind bars for making the hoax call. He’ll appear Wednesday afternoon in federal court in the Northern District of Texas. Source

Deaf Man's Ex-Roomate Arrested For Electronic Thief

VIDEO: Deputy chases man accused of stealing Deaf man's iPad, TV. Deaf man's ex-roommate Michael Palmer arrested.

VERO BEACH, Florida. - A deputy chased after the ex-roommate of a Deaf man whose television and iPad were stolen, an Indian River County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Carl Johnson returned to his group home Wednesday night and found he had been burglarized. His clothing, television and, most important, his iPad were gone.

Johnson, who uses the iPad as a way to overcome his challenges in communicating, called 911 and met with Indian River County Sheriff's Office Deputy Greg Farless.

Johnson was telling Farless that he believed his former roommate, Michael Dudley-Palmer, was the thief when Dudley-Palmer returned. Dudley-Palmer had come to the group home to visit another friend.

Farless approached Dudley-Palmer and said that's when Dudley-Palmer ran off. Farless chased him. "Not fun when you're as old as me," Farless said. "But I just stayed with him." The chase went through yards, hedges and streets and lasted three blocks before Dudley-Palmer gave up.

"He ended up admitting to taking the items," Farless said. "The iPad he sold on the street for drugs." Read more: http://www.wpbf.com/news/south-florida/treasure-coast-news/deputy-greg-farless-chases-man-accused-of-stealing-deaf-mans-ipad-tv/-/8882916/21704016/-/13f4i7g/-/index.html
