Being Deaf Person Is Weirder Than You Thought

Deaf News: Society has traditionally treated Deaf people like garbage, 1 of the top 5 reasons life as a Deaf person is weirder than you thought.

CRACKED -- There are over 500,000 Deaf people in the United States, but the only time we hear about Deaf Culture is when someone is making up sign language at presidential funerals, rioting, or teaching kids on Sesame Street.



As a result, the average person has no idea what being Deaf involves, and therefore life can get downright weird for anyone who can't hear like the rest of you. Well, I'm a sign language interpreter and an American Sign Language (ASL) graduate, and I'll try to give you a glimpse of how strange things can get...



#1. Society Has Traditionally Treated Deaf People Like Garbage.

For much of our history, society just didn't know what to do with Deaf people. In the B.C. era, the law of the Talmud denied Deaf people the right to own land, while St. Augustine in the early A.D.s made deafness a straight-up sin. It wasn't until the 1960s that interpreting for Deaf people was even a profession.



Before then, Deaf people relied on the help of family, teachers of Deaf people (like Helen Keller's Deaf-Blind teacher Anne Sullivan), and the occasional clergyman that learned some signs. If you didn't live in an area with a thriving Deaf community, you might as well be cut off from the world entirely.



Educators didn't have a problem with Deaf people until the 1880 Conference of Milan. A bunch of hearing people and one token Deaf guy got together in Italy to figure out just how Deaf people ought to be educated. You can sum up their conclusion as "Fuck sign language, just try real hard to speak." Even today, many Deaf people remember having their hands tied and wrists slapped to stop them from trying to sign.

This, as you can imagine, made life a lot more difficult for Deaf people and their families. From many (god-awful) parents' standpoint, it was easier to ship them off to a different country or just put them in an institution. To make matters worse, around the same time, Alexander Graham Bell was running amok.



The same guy who invented the telephone was actually an inventor/douchebag on par with Thomas Edison. And, like the douchiest bags of his day, Bell was really into the eugenics movement (Hitler found his work inspirational).



He spent his life pushing legislation that would force Deaf people to undergo surgery to make sure they couldn't have children together and make a "Deaf Race." Fearing this day, Bell pushed for the abolition of sign language because it brought Deaf people together. (Oddly enough, Bell's own mother and wife were Deaf. So yeah, probably some awkward holidays for that family.)

This should help explain why Deaf people are wary of anyone who claims to be able to "fix" them. Big-D Deaf people often oppose cochlear implants, and it isn't because they're anti-technology.



It's because they have a distinct culture that people have tried to wipe out. Road Rage is aggressive or angry behavior by a driver of an automobile or other road vehicle. Such behavior might include rude gestures, verbal insults, deliberately driving in an unsafe or threatening manner, or making threats.



Road rage can lead to altercations, assaults, and collisions that result in injuries and even deaths. It can be thought of as an extreme case of aggressive driving.

The rules of the road are present to ensure that people get to where they need to go safely, but sometimes those rules get broken. Whether by accident, or on purpose, the result can be ugly: tempers flare, fists fly, and occasionally things get out of control. The end result is totally priceless!

Millions people have watched hundreds of clips posted on the internet. While most road rage incidents usually end peacefully, not all do. Here are extreme examples captured on film from all over the world ... and one not-so-extreme one!



There, the absence of effective law enforcement coupled with booming sales of dashboard cameras has led to a surge of videos with scenes like these being posted on the internet.

Indeed, shocking footage of road rage rampages have become the latest form of entertainment in a country where the state has so much control of what is put on social media and television.



Road rage madness, the worst case of road rage we've ever come across was caught on camera by an innocent driver who found himself the target of a madman from the Southwest Australia.

On the footage you can hear the sound of the man punching Olsen's window as he drives off. He is yet another victim of the increasing number of road rage incidents which are turning quiet suburban streets into bitumen battlefields; where angry drivers are lashing out against other road users in unprovoked attacks.

But the madness was far from over. Olsen still didn't know if he was out of danger, even though the man appeared to be hurt, so having been rammed at least seven times and barely able to see though the windscreen, he continued driving to the nearest police station.



The now infamous black Nissan ute was garaged today at a sprawling Perth property while 21-year-old Edward Sullivan from Carbrook in Brisbane's south was being questioned by police. Source

Meanwhile in Russia... Road rage Russian style, in America, Britain, and Canada such terrifying episodes of road rage would be almost impossible to imagine but not in Russia - is way too intense. Even a cursory search on YouTube for 'road rage' reveals hundreds of clips and many of them are Russian.

How motorists settle their scores with guns, bats and axes in Russia. The clips showing armed drivers confronting each other being cut up or other lapses in driving etiquette have been watched by millions of Russians.

It is impossible to verify whether all the footage is all genuine. Undoubtedly, some will have been staged, but much appears to be real. Drivers say the root of the problem is corrupt policing and a failure to crack down on those involved in road rage and other motoring offences.

The most popular clips, shown on sites such as ru-chp.livejournal.com, are the road rage incidents, where - despite weapons occasionally being brandished - most involve old-fashioned fistfights. Source

VIDEO [CC] - Weird News - Residents of China were stunned when they saw what they thought to be towering sky scrapers appearing from the clouds.

FOSHAN, CHINA - The footage which was recorded by a local resident appears to show a huge mysterious city, including ‘skyscrapers’ floating in the clouds over the city of Foshan in in central Guangdong province, China on October 7, 2015.



The mysterious ‘city’ was reported to have giant skyscrapers and other smaller buildings which are clearly visible in the video.

According to reports, thousands of people spotted a giant ‘floating city’ over the city of Foshan in China. The mysterious ‘alien city’ or ‘heaven city’ as it has been called on social networks was photographed by shocked residents.



In the streets of Foshan, people watched in amazement as a giant city appeared out of nowhere which thousands of people stood still, watching the ‘ghostly city’ in what has been the second apparition of a flying city in China.



Only a couple of days after the city of Foshan almost came to a standstill as thousands of people watched the mysterious city appear in the sky, a similar phenomenon was reported in the province of Jiangxi, China.

Artificial Intelligence May Kill Us All By 2050

US News - The human race could vanish in the blink of an eye within our lifetimes. Or we could just as plausibly see our species become immortal by the middle of the 21 st century. That's the promise, and the threat, posed by the accelerating pace of research around Artificial Intelligence. It may be an either/or proposition.

Most people have heard about Ray Kurzweil's immensely hopeful view, captured in his books and lectures about "singularity." In that view, AI progresses in helpful leaps, benefitting humankind at nearly every step of the way.



A good example of the early benefits of AI that nearly everyone uses now is Google Maps. The next stage of AI will be a supercomputer that recreates human intelligence. And the final evolution is artificial super-intelligence (ASI) that learns so quickly that it literally "soars" past ordinary human intelligence and solves every problem confronting mankind.



But there is a dark, threatening side to the AI story, and it is only now being discussed publicly. Physicist Stephen Hawking has said that the development of ASI "could spell the end of the human race."



Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says he doesn't "understand why some people are not concerned" that an artificial super-intelligence by mid-century might save (or destroy) human civilization.



Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk fears that we are "summoning the demon" in our race to create an artificial super-intelligence.

What all of them agree on is that we may very well approach a "tripwire" sometime in the next 30 years, where a powerful supercomputer finally replicates the human brain and mind, and crosses over nearly instantly into super-intelligence.



And then what happens next is anyone's guess.



"While most scientists I've come across acknowledge that ASI would have the ability to send humans to extinction, many also believe that used beneficially, ASI's abilities could be used to bring individual humans, and the species as a whole, to…species immortality," writes Tim Urban, the author of the popular "Wait, But Why?" blog.



Right now, drones use AI to navigate very complicated landscapes in order to deliver bombs in battlefield conditions. But they're still piloted remotely by human beings.



Should a stealth bomber be developed that can fly itself (not dissimilar to Google's self-driving cars that likewise use AI), and then make decisions about where to drop bombs in battlefield conditions without human input, it could create a situation where AI is in control (and not humans).

Kurzweil believes we will hit this tripwire by 2045. Most of his scientific colleagues believe it is inevitable that we will hit it at some point in the 21 st century. Many of them are fearful of what happens when we cross it.



But why are they all so afraid of ASI? It's a good question - one that hasn't truly been explored all that much beyond a few boardrooms.



Much of what the public knows about the potential risks posed from AI applications comes from either science fiction movies such as "The Terminator," or from fears surrounding autonomous weapons with AI capabilities to target without human control. These are very real fears.

The truth is that AI is poised to do significant, irreparable harm right now, not just at some point in the future through the creation of a non-human super-intelligence, scientists have warned. AI combined with autonomous weapons could launch an era of indiscriminate killing the likes of which civilization has never seen before.



There have been two revolutions in warfare. With each revolution, humankind made a quantum leap in the ability to kill exponentially more people on the battlefield from a distance. We are on the cusp of the third revolution, engineered by AI. This one, though, may erase its inventor.

For centuries, if you wanted to kill someone, you had to do it at close range. Gunpowder gave us the ability to fire projectiles at enemies from a distance, and changed the concept of war for good. Soldiers could kill their enemy without seeing the result at close range.



Nuclear weapons created the second revolution in warfare. While few nuclear weapons have been put to use, their invention taught us that we could create very large weapons, launch them from an even greater distance, and kill many people on the battlefield all at once. War hasn't been the same since then.

But it is the third revolution in warfare - autonomous weapons that can largely think for themselves and target enemies on the battlefield without human intervention - that we should all be worried about. Once such weapons are created, there may be no turning back.



"Autonomous weapons are ideal for tasks such as assassinations, destabilizing nations, subduing populations and selectively killing a particular ethnic group," Musk, Hawking and others wrote in an open letter in July 2015. "Starting a military AI arms race is a bad idea, and should be prevented by a ban on offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control."



World leaders, to date, have ignored the scientists on the threats AI poses to our very existence, much as they've either ignored them (or moved slowly) on other existential future threats like climate change or nuclear proliferation.



But AI is different. Once a super-intelligent, big-data-crunching AI machine learns how to think and learn for itself, it may decide that carbon life forms are the obvious target in any threat scenario. At that point, it won't care what world leaders think.



So whether it's now, or later this century, it's time we took AI seriously (or at least understand Isaac Asimov's first law of robotics). Our lives most likely depend on it. Chinese Man Becomes Deaf After Using Super Glue Instead Of Ear Drops

VIDEO: Weird News - The 45-year-old said he was drowsy after waking in the middle of the night and grabbed the wrong bottle by mistake.

HANGZHOU, CHINA - An unfortunate man landed himself in a sticky situation when he mistook super glue for ear drops and had to endure a week of near-deafness.



Song Wan, 45, ran into a hospital's emergency department still in his pyjamas after he accidentally squirted an extra-strong adhesive, called 502 Glue, into his left ear.

He told the doctor how he was in the process of recovering from an ear infection and had wanted to use the drops to relieve an itch that was bothering him.



But he was drowsy after waking in the night and carelessly picked up the super glue before squeezing several drops of the powerful adhesive into his ear.



Realising his error, he then rushed to the First People’s Hospital of Hangzhou, in China’s Zhejiang province, where he was seen by Doctor Li Yong.



The medic, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, told him to simply wait a week.



Doctor Li explained that the mucous membrane in Song’s ear would secrete fluids to form a protective layer between the adhesive and his eardrum.



He said his eardrum would likely rupture if he peeled the glue off too soon. A week later, Song returned to the hospital and the substance was removed.



He told medics he had been a "nervous wreck" waiting to see whether he would regain the use of his ear, and praised the medical team for their advice. Source

'Chewbacca' Arrested At Polls On Election Day

ODESSA, UKRAINE - Force Flops? The Force prevents Odessa mayoral candidate 'Darth Vader' from voting - Darth Vader along with his convoy of Storm Troopers and wookie Chewbacca showed up to vote in the mayoral elections in Odessa, Ukraine, Sunday.



Lord Vader complained about the detention of his supporter. He also said he failed to cast his own ballot as he was missing from the voter registry - despite the fact he has a Ukrainian passport, issued for Darth Alekseyevich Vader.

Ukrainians are casting ballots in a poll that is viewed by many as a confidence vote for the ruling coalition, which has lost much of its popularity following 20 months of economic hardships. Despite the somber mood, there were a number of strange incidents that took place around the country.



Police arrest voting 'Chewbacca' with Han Solo nowhere to be seen - The growling, hairy spaceship mechanic from Star Wars was fined an equivalent of $7.50 on Sunday, after breaking the country's election laws, as he attempted to canvass voters for Darth Vader, according to the Ukrainian publication Dumskaya.

A man dressed as Star Wars’ Chewbacca was arrested after refusing to show documentation to police, outside an Odessa polling station on Sunday.



The detention of the erstwhile companion of smuggler-turned-hero Han Solo, who appears to have turned to the Dark Side, happened in the port city of Odessa. Chewbacca drove Darth Vader to a polling station, but police arrested him for violating a law that forbids campaigning on election day. They were also dismayed when he failed to produce a valid ID, and resisted arrest.

The True Story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin

Many are familiar with the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Few realise however, that the story is based on real events, which evolved over the years into a fairy tale made to scare children. For those unfamiliar with the tale, it is set in 1284 in the town of Hamelin, Lower Saxony, Germany. This town was facing a rat infestation, and a piper, dressed in a coat of many coloured, bright cloth, appeared. This piper promised to get rid of the rats in return for a payment, to which the townspeople agreed too. Although the piper got rid of the rats by leading them away with his music, the people of Hamelin reneged on their promise. The furious piper left, vowing revenge.



On the 26th of July of that same year, the piper returned and led the children away, never to be seen again, just as he did the rats. Nevertheless, one or three children were left behind, depending on which version is being told. One of these children was lame, and could not keep up, another was Deaf and could not hear the music, while the third one was Blind and could not see where he was going. Historians agree that an event did occur in Hamelin, Germany around 1284 that resulted in the total disappearance of children from the town.



What they cannot agree on is, What caused such a mass disappearance to occur? The earliest known record of this story does come from the town of Hamelin itself and was even depicted in a stained glass window created for the church of Hamelin in the memory of the children, which dates to around 1300 AD. Although it was destroyed in 1660, several written accounts have survived. The oldest comes from the Lueneburg, manuscript (c 1440 - 50), which stated: "In the year of 1284, on the day of Saints John and Paul on June 26, by a piper, clothed in many kinds of colours (that's what 'Pied' means), 130 children born in Hamelin were seduced, and lost at the place of execution near the Koppelberg Hill."



The pied piper story was passed on by word of mouth for centuries, and references to the account are mentioned occasionally in other works.

Walt Disney Silly Symphonies - The Pied Piper (1933) - The people of Hamelin, overrun with rats, offer a bag of gold to anyone who can rid them of their plague. A mysterious piper comes to town, and proceeds to rid them of their rat infestation with his music. When the townsfolk refuse to pay the piper his fee, because "all you did was pipe a tune", he lures all the town's children away to a magical land in the same manner.



However, the tale did not become popular until the Brothers Grimm (Jakob and Wilhelm) included it in their anthology of fairy tales. The disappearance of the children is held to be fact for a variety of reasons. The town's oldest record, dated 1384, states It's 100 years since our children have gone. There is also a long standing law dating back to medieval times that no music is allowed to be played and dancing is prohibited on the street in memory of those children that were.



At first, many historians focused on the rats. Believing the story described Hamelin's battle with the Black Death, also known the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague was one of the deadliest pandemics in recorded history, striking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. It was spread by rats, which carried fleas and which, in turn, carried the bubonic bacterium. When the rats died, the fleas turned to human hosts and infecting them as well.



Nevertheless, most researchers disregard this theory. This is due to the fact that the element of the rats was not added to the story until the 1500s. Furthermore, the plague did not reach Europe until the mid-1300s.The street where the children were last seen is today called Bungelosenstrasse (the street without drums), as no one is allowed to play music or dance there. The rats added to the story around the middle of the 16th century.



Moreover, the stained glass window and other primary written sources do not speak of any rats. If the children's disappearance was not an act of revenge, then what was its cause? There have been numerous theories trying to explain what happened to the children of Hamelin. For instance, one theory suggests that the Pied Piper was the personification of Death and the children were led out of town and drowned to prevent the adults from catching a plague prior to the Black Death or that the children ran away on their own to start their own colony or village.



The Pied Piper Tale is just a fantastical way of telling a gruesome true story about what was actually a maniacal paedophile who creeped into town at night and lured the children away from safety. This sounds like the most plausible version because if there really were no rats, what reason would some weird guy dancing around playing the flute have to lure kids away from town only for the kids to never be seen again. Fapping Guy Calls Deaf Video Service 4,000 Times

Deaf News: Guy calls Deaf video service 4,000 times - Allegedly got naked, masturbated in front of ZVRS employees.



NEW YORK POST - A Brooklyn man is using a video calling service for the Deaf to reach out and touch himself, the company providing the service alleges in a lawsuit.



David Marcano is one of the most fervent users of software offered by a Florida company, ZVRS, which gets federal money every time a hearing-disabled person uses its product to place a call, the company claims.



The software allows the Deaf to call one of ZVRS’s sign language interpreters via video chat. The interpreters act as operators, placing calls to third parties on behalf of the Deaf person and then translating the call.



But Marcano, 51, isn’t Deaf, and his calls don’t need any translating, the company says in Brooklyn federal court papers.



Marcano has made 4,646 calls to ZVRS since Jan. 1 “for the sole purpose of masturbating in view of ZVRS’s employees,” the business says.



“In every call made through ZVRS’s software platform, Marcano appears on the video call for the purpose of exposing his genitals or masturbating to ZVRS’s female staff,” according to the suit which seeks unspecified damages.



As soon as ZVRS cancels Marcano’s account, he uses false information to create a new one, they gripe. He’s called from eight different numbers, and contacted them as recently as Sept. 21, the company charges.



He has signed up for new ZVRS accounts under the names “Davey Mareno,” “Davey Mar,” “Dave Maccan,” “Dave Mard” and “Dave Macan,” among others.



The calls have cost the company productivity and business and left ZVRS’s employees with emotional distress, the firm claims.



ZVRS also is seeking an injunction against Marcano to stop his hands-on use of their service, accusing him of fraud and breach of contract because he signed up for software he doesn’t need.



Marcano didn’t respond to messages sent to each of the 24 e-mail addresses ZVRS says he used to create the fake accounts. SOURCE
