Ban Religious Symbols In Public

VIDEO [CC] - Quebec reveals religious symbols to be banned from public sector.

Government of QuebecQUEBEC, Canada - Quebec would become the only jurisdiction in North America to impose a sweeping ban on religious clothing for public employees, including at schools, hositpals, and courthouses, under a "Charter of Values" whose details were released.

The Globe and Mail - The Parti Québécois government is leading Quebec into a wrenching debate over faith and the future place of minorities in the province by unveiling a charter of values that would ban Muslim headscarves, Sikh turbans, Jewish kippas and other “overt” religious symbols from the public service.

Watch Gallery & Videos

Details of its long-awaited charter confirm what has been leaked in the media in recent weeks: if adopted, Quebec would become the only government in Canada seeking state secularism by restricting religious-based clothing for public employees. The government went as far on Tuesday as publishing sartorial dos-and-don’ts, with pictograms of Sikh turbans and Muslim face veils in the verboten category, and discreet cross pendants or Star of David rings on the acceptable list.

“If the state is neutral, those working for the state should be equally neutral in their image,” said the minister in charge of the charter, Bernard Drainville.

Response to the package, which instantly became news around the world, was swift and divided. Ever since they surfaced last month, the government’s proposals have exposed rifts: between Quebec and the rest of Canada, between Montreal and mostly non-immigrant regions, and among Quebeckers themselves. Deaf Man Beaten To Death In His Home

Deaf man beaten to death in his home. His nose was broken, his larynx crushed and clumps of hair ripped from his head.

AURORA, Colorado. - Jonny Braning did a hilarious impression of Elvis. Though he was Deaf, the 48-year-old man had lived a full life.

The simple pleasures Jonny lived for seeing his granddaughter and making people smile were all taken from him between Feb. 26 and March 7, 2002, when someone bludgeoned him to death in his small Aurora apartment.

Robbery may have been the intent, according to a story by former Rocky Mountain News reporter Sarah Huntley. But it was hard for investigators to understand why.

Jonny was living on disability and didn’t have much money, Huntley reported.

Over the years he had worked for King Soopers, Jolly Rancher and as a janitor for a telecommunications company. But he was unemployed and lived on his monthly disability check. He would go to a corner store and write a note for a clerk when he needed something.

He lived in a small apartment at 1097 S. Evanston Way.

It appeared that whoever killed Jonny first attacked him in his bedroom, possibly with some type of blunt weapon, which was never found. Apparently a battle continued into his living room.

His body was found lying on the floor in his living room by maintenance workers who became worried when they realized they hadn’t seen the man, who was a fixture of the complex, in days. The carpet was soaked with blood. Read more: http://blogs.denverpost.com/coldcases/2013/08/31/deaf-and-mute-aurora-man-beaten-to-death-in-his-home/7198/

Learn ASL As I Learn ASL! Life As A Deaf Girl

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Learn ASL As I Learn ASL! Life as a Deaf Girl.

Calen Wright's new video on YouTube to educate the Oralism and Hearing community. To see just how different, watch and learn from the educational video.

Calen Wright, who is a deaf, which is issuing a call to action, inviting community to be part of the solution to explain why she is doing a good cause, to educating and awareness about the life as a Deaf. Please watch & share!

(Translation in description)

I'm Deaf. I was born deaf and raised to be oral with the help of speech therapy. At age three, I received hearing aids for the first time. My life was bombarded with magical sound.

Now, for three years I have been taking ASL. When the doctor diagnosed that I was deaf, my mom cried and cried. Her heart wrenched. She denied, "It's a lie! My baby girl is hearing. It must be a mistake!" Yet, it was true.

After I received hearing aids, two years later I entered Kindergarten in a mainstreamed private college preparatory school called Webb School. Socially, school was hard. It still is. I hated the noisy cafeteria.

Whenever I tried talking to people, I couldn't hear what they said back, responding with "I can't hear you." Other people would say, "Oh, I'm sorry." I'd have communication failures. I struggled to make friends. I was different.

People would look at me and be intimidated because I was deaf. I wanted to connect with people, but when I tried to open up to others, I couldn't do it. Then, I discovered Deaf Culture. My search was done. I felt like I could fit in and be a part of a group. I found my identity.

Arizona Mom & Deaf Daughter Upset With UPS

Glendale mom and Deaf daughter upset with UPS. She and her daughter never received it and she can't get anyone to at UPS to help her.

GLENDALE, Arizona. - Katelyn Nerhood is an affectionate little 9-year-old girl who happens to be Deaf. But that doesn't keep her from communicating with the people she loves, like her mom, Melody Nerhood. "Her world is different than ours," says Nerhood. "I mean, she can't hear our conversations. She can't hear music. She can't hear TV."

Nerhood says her daughter suffers from a disorder called CHARGE Syndrome. The disorder, she says, has left her Katelyn completely deaf and her vision partially impaired.

But, like most nine year olds, Katelyn still loves to play games and have fun. That's exactly why Melody bought her daughter a device called the Nabi2, which is supposed to help kids learn and have fun at the same time.

Melody says her daughter had the device for about a year. However, two months ago when it stopped working, she mailed it back, and Nabi sent her another one. Nabi used United Parcel Service, commonly referred to as UPS, for shipping. But Melody says she and her daughter never received it and she can't get anyone to at UPS to help her.

"Nobody ever contacts me," she says. "I just keep getting the runaround."

UPS sent Melody an email notice indicating they successfully delivered the gadget way back in June and left it in the "rear entrance."

UPS even lists the date, time and address of the delivery. However, when looking at the UPS email, they clearly document the wrong numerical address. Instead of delivering it to Nerhood's town home, UPS misread the address and left it all the way on the other side of her complex at the "rear entrance" of a completely different home. And the package has been missing since then. Read more: http://www.azfamily.com/news/Glendale-mom-and-deaf-daughter-upset-with-UPS--221216601.html

Gallaudet: Alleged Assault High School Students

Gallaudet University: Police probe sex assault involving 2 Gallaudet high school students during school trip.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland. - Anne Arundel County police are investigating an alleged assault involving two students from Gallaudet University’s secondary school during a school trip to Annapolis.

Deaf Man's Ex-Roomate Arrested For Electronic Thief

VIDEO: Deputy chases man accused of stealing Deaf man's iPad, TV. Deaf man's ex-roommate Michael Palmer arrested.

VERO BEACH, Florida. - A deputy chased after the ex-roommate of a Deaf man whose television and iPad were stolen, an Indian River County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Carl Johnson returned to his group home Wednesday night and found he had been burglarized. His clothing, television and, most important, his iPad were gone.

Johnson, who uses the iPad as a way to overcome his challenges in communicating, called 911 and met with Indian River County Sheriff's Office Deputy Greg Farless.

Johnson was telling Farless that he believed his former roommate, Michael Dudley-Palmer, was the thief when Dudley-Palmer returned. Dudley-Palmer had come to the group home to visit another friend.

Farless approached Dudley-Palmer and said that's when Dudley-Palmer ran off. Farless chased him. "Not fun when you're as old as me," Farless said. "But I just stayed with him." The chase went through yards, hedges and streets and lasted three blocks before Dudley-Palmer gave up.

"He ended up admitting to taking the items," Farless said. "The iPad he sold on the street for drugs." Read more: http://www.wpbf.com/news/south-florida/treasure-coast-news/deputy-greg-farless-chases-man-accused-of-stealing-deaf-mans-ipad-tv/-/8882916/21704016/-/13f4i7g/-/index.html
