Photo Tour: Behind the Scenes of the Chopped Kitchen.

Food Network's Chopped KitchenWhen it comes to cooking on Chopped, much is made of each round’s mystery baskets, filled with four unusual and often disparate ingredients that chefs are required to incorporate into their dishes.

While these oddball picks are, of course, what add deliciously addictive intrigue and drama to the show, it takes more than just a spread of peanut brittle, Marsala wine, durian and wonton wrappers to outcook the chopping block.

If the competitors want to survive three rounds of intense culinary battle, they must utilize next-level appliances and advanced tools, in addition to a myriad of common and eccentric products alike, to transform the basket ingredients and create a winning plate. ...READ MORE at: http://blog.foodnetwork.com/fn-dish/2013/04/photo-tour-behind-the-scenes-of-the-chopped-kitchen/

Do We Need Specialized Hardware For The Deaf ?

VIDEO: Do we need specialized hardware for the Deaf? Companies that once made specialized hardware may soon be relegated to software and services.

A company called Purple Communications this week unveiled a product called SmartVP. It’s a videophone with applications and features to help Deaf people communicate. Purple says it’s the first videophone to feature “true HD quality.”

How do Deaf people use the telephone? In the past, most used a typing system called TTY. Paging devices soon followed; the term became so fixed that the Deaf community is said to still call all wireless devices, including iPhones, “pagers.”

But the age of the video call has changed all that. Now, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing routinely communicate by simply using sign language over a video call. When a Deaf person wants to communicate with a hearing person, there are “relay services,” involving live translators proficient in sign language.

One smart thing Purple’s doing is pursuing what they call a “five-screen strategy.” What this means is that their customers can use Purple’s relay service on PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or TV. Here’s a YouTube video pitching SmartVP. Refreshingly, it’s not full of over-the-top music, like the majority of tech promotional fare out there. ...READ MORE: http://www.technologyreview.com/view/513336/do-we-need-specialized-hardware-for-the-deaf/

SMU Ads Targeting Deaf Students

VIDEO [CC] - Discover how Ginny's SMU experience encouraged her to start up a social enterprise for the Deaf.

Ginny Ong Jing Yun is undergraduate in Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management) and Started up a social enterprise for the Deaf. "I thought that nobody would understand what I was saying. Over the years, Singapore Management University (SMU) slowly gave me a lot of tips on how to participate effectively. I learnt how to be more outspoken, more confident of myself.

Two years ago I set up this social enterprise it's called iDeaf-Connect. My aim is to use this company to create Deaf awareness. Also, we wanted to have a business to provide jobs for the Deaf. We aim to use this place as a training hub.

I will go out and meet my clients. I will give talks and I will share with them how they can work with the Deaf better. The broad-based curriculum at SMU gave me a lot of knowledge. It helped me to understand better how companies run their business.

You have a lot of projects so you have to face a lot of deadlines. It motivates me to be quick, be creative, think out of the box to finish the project. So the same thing can apply to my company as well. To me, if not for the interactive style (of education) in SMU, I wouldn't be here talking to you today." Welcome to SMU. White Stripes "We're Going To Be Friends." Produced by D-PAN, the Deaf Professional Arts Network. American Sign Language Direction by Ronald Dans. Directed by Nicholas Hill of Lucky Airlines.

lyrics: Fall is here, hear the yell back to school, ring the bell brand new shoes, walking blues climb the fence, books and pens I can tell that we're going to be friends.

Walk with me, Suzy Lee through the park and by the tree we will rest upon the ground and look at all the bugs we found then safely walk to school without a sound.

Well here we are, no one else we walked to school all by ourselves there's dirt on our uniforms from chasing all the ants and worms we clean up and now its time to learn.

Numbers, letters, learn to spell nouns, and books, and show and tell at playtime we will throw the ball back to class, through the hall teacher marks our height against the wall.

And we don't notice any time pass we don't notice anything we sit side by side in every class teacher thinks that I sound funny but she likes the way you sing.

Tonight I'll dream while I'm in bed when silly thoughts go through my head about the bugs and alphabet and when I wake tomorrow I'll bet that you and I will walk together again cause I can tell that we're going to be friends.
