VIDEO: Campaign: Canadian Film 'Ice & Quiet' A Deaf Hockey Documentary.
TORONTO - Imagine living without hearing. You'd miss the sounds of the world - music, laughter, traffic noises as you try to cross the road, a friend shouting out in the street behind you, the roar of a crowd at a hockey game.
Even the whistle of the referee or call of your teammates as you tried to play. Would you even try to play?
But what if there was a way you could despite this? What if Deaf hockey was a thing?... Oh wait, it is. And it's got an exciting story we want to share with the world.
The Ontario Deaf Hockey Association was founded in 2011 to bring Deaf and Hearing individuals and athletes together and provide pathways in sport and hockey for Deaf athletes in the province. As our athletes prepare for the Deaflympics (yeah, that's also a thing), we're putting together a documentary about Deaf hockey to help build awareness of the sport and garner support for the love of the game.
And also just because it a fascinating topic, right?
As part of the documentary, we've partnered with many different organizations including the Hockey Hall of Fame, Glide, Karbon Sports, CrossIceHockey, Epic Toronto and Kobe Sportswear.
It's going to be an intriguing and arousing short documentary with game footage along with some fan interviews. But before we can put it all together, we need your help Raising CA$3,000 to cover things like equipment, location and interpreter costs. The remaining amount will be put back into the Ontario Deaf Hockey Association to ensure that the program's success to help athletes accomplish their dreams of playing hockey and representing their province and later, Team Canada at the Deaflympics. Sign up to donate HERE.
So if you love hockey, are curious about a different version of the game or just want to be involved in an exciting documentary that will score goals at film festivals, here's your chance to get involved. We've got some great perks for all your generous support and because we're still in production there's even opportunity to be interviewed on screen... First Deaf Woman Swims Anacapa Channel
Deaf News: A swimmer from Colorado made local history being the first Deaf woman to complete the Anacapa Island Channel swim.
SANTA BARBARA - Micki Poole, a 50-year-old Deaf competitive swimmer from Greeley, Colorado completed the swim on September 12th in 7 hours, 2 minutes off the Santa Barbara coast. Poole became the first Deaf person to finish the 12.4 mile feat.
The channel is a challenge for all types of swimmers. The water is cold and choppy with strong currents, not to mention the predatory fish lingering about. Plus there are a host of rules making it even hard, one being the use of a wetsuit is prohibited.
"Typically five people attempt this swim every year, and half of them make it", said the president of the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association, Scott Zornig. Poole will be recognized for her accomplishment at the club's banquet in November.
"Channel swimmers typically have their coach on a boat telling them what to do, when to take breaks, and most importantly to encourage the swimmer... Read more: http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=158763

Deaflympics & The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics
VIDEO: Deaf sports and the Paralympic Games - Deaf athletes could compete at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, claims IPC President. However, Sir Philip Craven did not say this and had been misquoted.
Insidethegames - Sir Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), has claimed discussions to introduce events for Deaf athletes into the Paralympics are ongoing and could be successful by the time of the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
But the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) claimed that they had been led to believe that no such process was currently underway. "It is an objective to get some events for Deaf athletes into the Paralympics," Sir Philip said. "There has been communication about events being brought back [and] discussions will be ongoing."
Sir Philip highlighted a meeting he had with the new President of the ICSD, Russian Valery Rukhledev, during the International Olympic Committee's annual Session in Buenos Aires last month to illustrate that talks were underway.
"There will be a minimum of seven years of discussions, so it is not something likely for 2016 but it could be in future years," said Sir Philip. But Mark Cooper, chief executive of the ICSD, claimed that they had not been informed of any roadmap that would see them make their debut in the Paralympics at Tokyo 2020.
"ICSD has never been given a minimum amount of time for membership by the IPC," he told insidethegames. "In broad terms we asked before London 2012 about adding events for Deaf athletes and were told then that there was not enough time to do so.
"We asked what the procedure currently was and were told that no procedure was currently in place and that we should await further clarification from the IPC."
Although originally forming part of what was then know as the International Co-ordination Committee of World Sports Organisations for the Disabled (ICC) Deaf events broke away in 1996 following the formation of the IPC in 1989.
Cooper remained adamant that if Deaf events were returned to the Paralympics then it would still not spell the end for the Deaflympics - which were first held in Paris in 1924 so 36 years before the inaugural Paralympics at Rome in 1960. But he conceded "it has since become clear that the Paralympic Games has garnered a lot of attention and a higher profile".
The Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria this year enjoyed far less media attention than the Paralympic events at the Anniversary Games athletics in London, for example. ... IPC Statement regarding Deaf sports and the Paralympic Games.
We note an incorrect report quoting IPC President Sir Philip Craven saying “It is an objective to get some events for Deaf athletes into the Paralympics,” in a story that claims Deaf athletes could compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Sir Philip Craven did not say this and had been misquoted.
What Sir Philip Craven in fact was referring to is that it is an objective of the ICSD (International Committee of Sports for the Deaf) to get some events for Deaf athletes into the Paralympics.

Deaf USA Team Handball Scandal
VIDEO [ASL] - All About Deaf USA Team Handball Scandal.
This vlog covers the scandal of US Deaf Team Handball which was coachec by TSD AD Chris Hamilton to Sofia, Bulgaria.
SOFIA, Bulgaria - The U.S. Team Handball squad’s last game of the 2013 Deaflympics on Saturday came down to the final seconds.
After a last-minute Russian scoring run, the Americans were down 30-29 with six seconds left. Top U.S. scorer Stefan Bergan moved fast and scored a seven-meter penalty shot in the final three seconds to force a tie between the U.S. and Russia, 30-all.
However, because overtime only occurs in games in which medals are at stake, the Americans had to be satisfied with the 30-30 tie and sixth place in the standings. Full story at http://www.usdeafsports.org/news/2013/aug/3/handball-ends-deaflympics-tie-game/
The results of the Deaflympics handball game in Sofia: http://sofia2013.com/games/sports/Handball
Although its popularity spans the globe, the Olympic sport of team handball is just emerging in the United States and often suffers an identity crisis. Most of the world calls the game "handball," but in the U.S. there is already another game with that name. Most Americans who hear of team handball envision participants on something like a racquetball court smacking a little black ball with their hands. SOFIA - The 22rd Summer Deaflympics held in Sofia, Bulgaria -The Closing Ceremony Press Release on Sofia 2013.com: Mr Cooper (CEO, ICSD) and Eli Zaharieva (Organising Committee, Host Country) started the meeting by drawing attention to particular highlights of the Games so far, and the exciting final weekend of the Games to come. Eli Zaharieva was delighted to report on the progress of Bulgarian athletes with medals for their wrestling team. Mr Cooper then explained the outline for the Closing Ceremony on Sunday.
The Men's football final will take place at Vasil Levski Stadium, and depending on whether the match is completed after 90 minutes or there is a need for extra time, the turnaround will be quite quick.
The plan is to vacate the stadium and go to the neighbouring park, Boris Gardens while the stadium is prepared for the Speeches and the Closing Ceremony video.
After the speeches and the passing of the flag at Vasil Levski Stadium, there will be entertainment at Boris Gardens, which will include a customary Bulgarian folk dance company.
As one Deaf world, we will all be together, mingle and celebrate the Deaflympics as one community. The element of Deaf culture where there will be no time limit, as the lamps in the park will all be kept on so there will be plenty of light for sign language and celebration.

Manitoba Swimmer At Deaflympics
VIDEO [CC] - Manitoba's swimmer at Deaflympics. Thomas Osborn, The Kelvin High School student will represent Canada at the 2013 Deaflympics July 26-Aug. 4 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
WINNIPEG - Thomas Osborn lives in three worlds. Deaf, hearing and underwater. It's in the water world he is reaching heights never imagined by him or his family when his hearing, on a continuous decline since birth, completely disappeared at age 10.
The Kelvin High School student will represent Canada at the 2013 Deaflympics July 26-Aug. 4 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He's one of just six swimmers on Team Canada for the international multi-sport games, which is sanctioned by the International Committeee of Sports of the Deaf. (Deaf athletes are not eligible for the Paralympics so this is their Olympics.)
"There's a running joke with athletes who swim is that the pool is a second home," said Thomas, a member of the Manitoba Marlins Swim Club. "Our group spends over 25 hours (per week) training. Swimming has given me a lot of achievements, I'm proud of that, and I am hoping to achieve even more."
The youngest child and only son of Carolynn and DeWayne Osborn, Thomas will compete in five events at the Deaflympics the 400-, 200-, 100- and 50-metre freestyle events and the 200-m individual medley.
"It's amazing to me, for him to get to the level he is at in swimming, given what he's had to overcome," DeWayne said.
"We're very proud of all the things he's accomplished," Carolynn said. "You don't always get what you want in life. You play the hand you were dealt. So that's the hand we've been dealt, that's the hand he's been dealt, and I think he's played it remarkably well."
A friendly, polite, confident young man, with an easy smile, Thomas turned 17 on Sunday, the day he left for Bulgaria. Read more at http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/water-world-216880051.html

B.C.'s Bree Sproule Off To Deaf Olympics With Team Canada
British Columbia's Bree Sproule off to Deaf Olympics with Team Canada.
OYAMA - For most of her young life, volleyball player Bree Sproule has been a rarity in the small community of Oyama, British Columbia.
She's the only deaf person in Oyama, the northern-most point of Lake Country. She was the only deaf player on her school and club volleyball teams and the only deaf kid of six siblings, born and raised in Oyama.
But over the past year Sproule, 19, has been hanging with people much like her. She has completed her first year at Gaulladet University in Washington, DC, the world's only university specifically for Deaf people where she was a member of the women's volleyball team.
And last week she departed with 10 other Deaf volleyball players as part of Team Canada that will take part in the 22nd Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria. Close to 4,000 Deaf people from 84 countries will be competing.
"It's really exciting, I've never been to Europe before," said Sproule through her interpreter, her sister Brooke. "It's going to be a new experience for me. I'm really excited to see the different culture and to learn about the history. It's going to be really fun to be with the team because we are all going to be together and there is going to be a lot of Deaf people there." Deaflympics: Press Conference In Sofia, Bulgaria
VIDEO: Press conference of the International Olympic Committee and Mark Cooper.
SOFIA - A press conference held in Sofia before the upcoming Deaflympics from 26 July to 4 August in the capital of Bulgaria. About 5,000 athletes from 80 countries are expected to participate in the competition in 18 sports.
The journalists were briefed by the President of the Organizing Committee Lazar Kamenov, the Secretary General of the International Federation of the Deaf Marc Cooper, President of the Bulgarian Sports Federation for the Deaf Nikola Nikolov, and a representative of the ministry Tanya Stoyanova. Journalists were informed in detail about the organization.
Nikolay Nikolov: We will have many reasons to see you again. Deaflympics is the name in the International Olympic Committee, which means the official Olympic Games for the Deaf.
Lazar Kamenov: The crisis is not only in our country but around the world. But since the last time Bulgaria successfully hosted several World championships for Deaf athletes we decided it was a good basis to expand the scope of the sports disciplines by hosting the Olympics.
During the Games in Sofia will be held the next Congress of the International Federation of Sports for the Deaf, where it is expected the number of participating countries to reach the number 100. VIP guests from various sports organizations will be in the capital of Bulgaria At the event is expected Mr. Christopher Dubie to represent the IOC. Visit http://sofia2013.com for more informations.
