Deaf Hockey Documentary 'Ice and Quiet'

VIDEO: Campaign: Canadian Film 'Ice & Quiet' A Deaf Hockey Documentary.

TORONTO - Imagine living without hearing. You'd miss the sounds of the world - music, laughter, traffic noises as you try to cross the road, a friend shouting out in the street behind you, the roar of a crowd at a hockey game.

Even the whistle of the referee or call of your teammates as you tried to play. Would you even try to play?

But what if there was a way you could despite this? What if Deaf hockey was a thing?... Oh wait, it is. And it's got an exciting story we want to share with the world.

The Ontario Deaf Hockey Association was founded in 2011 to bring Deaf and Hearing individuals and athletes together and provide pathways in sport and hockey for Deaf athletes in the province. As our athletes prepare for the Deaflympics (yeah, that's also a thing), we're putting together a documentary about Deaf hockey to help build awareness of the sport and garner support for the love of the game.

And also just because it a fascinating topic, right?

As part of the documentary, we've partnered with many different organizations including the Hockey Hall of Fame, Glide, Karbon Sports, CrossIceHockey, Epic Toronto and Kobe Sportswear.

It's going to be an intriguing and arousing short documentary with game footage along with some fan interviews. But before we can put it all together, we need your help Raising CA$3,000 to cover things like equipment, location and interpreter costs. The remaining amount will be put back into the Ontario Deaf Hockey Association to ensure that the program's success to help athletes accomplish their dreams of playing hockey and representing their province and later, Team Canada at the Deaflympics. Sign up to donate HERE.

So if you love hockey, are curious about a different version of the game or just want to be involved in an exciting documentary that will score goals at film festivals, here's your chance to get involved. We've got some great perks for all your generous support and because we're still in production there's even opportunity to be interviewed on screen... #DeafTalent - Deaf Roles Belong To Deaf Actors

VIDEO: #DeafTalent - Campaign: Hollywood, stop hiring hearing actors for Deaf roles. Deaf people have the right to represent themselves!

As a result of this #DeafTalent campaign, the world will have a much better understanding of the Deaf community’s standpoint on not allowing Deaf roles to be given out to hearing people. Many people do not realize that they have been oppressing Deaf actors for many years now.

We hope that this new awareness will also create many more job opportunities for Deaf people all over, both in front and behind the camera, as well as other places. We believe that this campaign will ignite many new discussions and ideas and help cause a shift in societal awareness.

Huffington Post - The #DeafTalent hashtag began making waves after a NY Daily News interview with Catalina Sandino Moreno raised red flags in the Deaf community. Moreno, a hearing actress, was cast to play a Deaf woman in the leading role of her new film Medeas. But in the NYDN interview, it became clear that Moreno has had very little exposure to deafness or Deaf culture.

CODA Kambri Crews and Burn Down The Ground

VIDEO: CODA - Kambri Crews and Burn Down The Ground: A Memoir:

NEW YORK CITY - Kambri Crews is an American comedic storyteller based in New York City and author of Burn Down The Ground: A Memoir, a book about her chaotic childhood with Deaf parents.

For fans of Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle, an unflinching, emotional memoir by the hearing daughter-CODA of two Deaf parents, about the rampant dysfunction of her rural Texas childhood and the searing violence that left her father serving a twenty-year prison sentence.

Successful New York producer and publicist Kambri Crews always knew that her childhood was unusual - she spent much of it in a tin shack deep with her family in the woods of Texas. But when, in her early 30s, her charismatic and adored father is sentenced to twenty years in prison for stabbing and nearly killing his girlfriend, she must confront for the first time his violent, destructive behavior.

In her brutally honest, completely captivating memoir, Crews struggles to forge a relationship with her incarcerated father and revisits her unconventional family and the long road she took to her current life. ... Read more reviews of BURN DOWN THE GROUND

Here’s what folks are saying about Kambri Crews and Burn Down the Ground: A Memoir:

“Poignant and unsettling.” - Kirkus Reviews.

“…a compelling testament to the strength of the human spirit.” - Booklist.

“Harrowing . . . A remarkable odyssey of scorched earth, collateral damage, and survival.” - Publishers Weekly.

“Kambri Crews has proven that absurdity, chaos and full blown dysfunction make for a fascinating memoir.” - Janeane Garofalo.

Deaf Schools 'Home' (VIDEO)

VIDEO: [CC] - American Sign Language storytelling of the Deaf Schools 'Home'

Deaf Institutions, Since 1950, over 67 percent of our homes are disappearing in America. - In this day and age of economic cuts, the closure of educational programs and schools for the deaf has been viewed as a convenient way to reduce budgets. Over the past 63 years, several schools for the deaf have been closed and numerous others have experienced cuts as well as the threat of closure.

Closing such schools actually result in increased long term costs for states rather than serving as a cost-saving measure and, more importantly, result in severe educational deficits for many Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Switched at Birth Actress Asks Community To Help Funds For Deaf Children

VIDEO [ASL] - Switched at Birth actress asks community to help raise funds for ESD (Evangelical School for the Deaf) for a better future. An important message from her heart for the Deaf community.

Look at USA, already have a several Deaf organizations, events, clubs, sports, etc. A strong Deaf community which is close knit. Many Deaf Americans are proud for who they are, socializing with Deaf/HOH people often, and supportive each other. What about Puerto Rico? Where is that? Secondly, less than 5% Hearing families with Deaf child who can communicate in sign language in Puerto Rico (Documented by David and Marsha.) Can you believe that? 2013?

Deaf schools and mainstreamed schools are in need to improve education system for the Deaf children. I asked a teacher about the Deaf children, she mentioned that most Deaf children have no self esteem or no role models to look up at. They need to grow their self esteem to love themselves. They need to have a role model to look up at so they can achieve anything they dream.

It is time to raise Deaf awareness for a better future!

Established in 2005, the non-stock, non-profit organization has been working with volunteers in projects for and with the Deaf community.

Deaf Awareness: 'I Sign and I Live' Short Film

Click on the image above to watch the 32-minute film with subtitles.

If you watch this short film, then you guys should open your eyes and understand in 'I Sign and I Live' by Aidan Mack. The 32-minute film about a Deaf teacher and her Deaf niece. This film is related to cochlear implants and suppression of ASL. Thank you for watching.

The 32-minutes dramatic film, I Sign and I Live, is about Daisy, a Deaf teacher who faces prejudices and sterotypes in society at large. She faces a battle of wills in her own family with her sister over the matter the upbringing of her niece Dawn. Her hearing sister Kay makes decision to have her Deaf daughter, Dawn, fitted with cochlear implant. Daisy is appalled at the decision. It amounts to Kay rejecting Dawn's Deaf identity. Her sister is under the false impression that having any amount of hearing, no matter how limited and no matter the risk involved in obtaining it, is better than being Deaf and is better than experiencing life as a visual being.

Kay has always been prejudiced against Deaf people, though she was able to hide her prejudice until her decision to have Daisy implanted. Daisy is an educated professional and is hurt to discover Kay's ignorance. Kay is less educated and does not work outside the home. She doesn't believe that Deaf people can succeed professionally, even though she was witnessed Daisy's success and her accomplishments.

Daisy's niece is removed from her signing classroom and placed in an oral, auditory-oriented class. She is not allowed to sign with anyone. Dawn is not allowed to interact with Daisy at all. The story of the battle between Daisy and her sister ends with a tragic conclusion. Kay, along with the larger society, tries to suppress the use of sign language, but Deaf people like Daisy continue fighting on to sign - and live.

"Our First Weekend Filming" by Aidan Mack's blog.

To those of you, including newcomers, who are getting involved in participating and even working in the Deaf community through interpreting, teaching, and advocating, this is an opportunity to reciprocate and give back to the Deaf community for all it has provided to you, a knowledge of language, ASL and opportunity for jobs and to be involved with us in advocating for our own existence as Deaf beings. This is great opportunity for you to give back to the Deaf community, by donating to the financial support of this film, “I Sign and I Live.”
