#DeafTalent - Deaf Roles Belong To Deaf Actors

VIDEO: #DeafTalent - Campaign: Hollywood, stop hiring hearing actors for Deaf roles. Deaf people have the right to represent themselves!

As a result of this #DeafTalent campaign, the world will have a much better understanding of the Deaf community’s standpoint on not allowing Deaf roles to be given out to hearing people. Many people do not realize that they have been oppressing Deaf actors for many years now.

We hope that this new awareness will also create many more job opportunities for Deaf people all over, both in front and behind the camera, as well as other places. We believe that this campaign will ignite many new discussions and ideas and help cause a shift in societal awareness.

Huffington Post - The #DeafTalent hashtag began making waves after a NY Daily News interview with Catalina Sandino Moreno raised red flags in the Deaf community. Moreno, a hearing actress, was cast to play a Deaf woman in the leading role of her new film Medeas. But in the NYDN interview, it became clear that Moreno has had very little exposure to deafness or Deaf culture.

Deaf Taylor Swift 'Scream Queens' TV Series

VIDEO [CC] - 'Scream Queens' Whitney Meyer on how she landed the role of Deaf Taylor Swift.

Design&Trend - Whitney Meyer was "psyched" to be part of "Scream Queens" despite her short stint on the show.

The 20-year-old newcomer played Tiffany, a.k.a. Deaf Taylor Swift, on the Fox comedy-horror series. But during a recent FaceTime session with Cosmopolitan, Meyer revealed that she actually auditioned for the role by singing one of Lorde's hit songs.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"I sent [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] a taped audition. My mom and I, we blocked the scene with the breakdowns that were sent to me. They saw my tape and apparently they loved it. I got an email and they wanted to fly me out for the shoot so I could play Tiffany. It was unexpected," the actress and figure skater said.

"In my audition tape, I was singing Lorde's song "Royals," so it was different," she added. "I was supposed to have brown hair. I guess they changed it."

When asked if her character was originally supposed to be Lorde fan, she said, "Yeah. Maybe. That's what it appeared to be."

Despite the sudden changes, Meyer was totally fine playing Swift instead. "I was psyched. When I got the [actual] script I was like, 'Oh my god! I'm Taylor Swift now," ... Read more: http://www.designntrend.com/articles/scream-queens-whitney-meyer-deaf-taylor-swift.htm

ABC Family's 'Switched at Birth' Seen As Good Sign

WALNUT CREEK, CA. - Olivia Stein, a 17-year-old student at California School for the Deaf in Fremont, Calif., can probably count on one hand how many times she has seen someone like herself beaming from a television screen.

"It allows us to be more involved. We can relate. We're finally seeing people like us," she said through a sign-language interpreter. "And it's showing the world that Deaf people are cool. We rock."

"Switched at Birth" doesn't focus solely on deafness the soapy twists and turns cover a wide terrain. But it does explore several pertinent Deaf issues, including communication and societal barriers, speech therapy and the debate over cochlear implants.

It also makes extensive use of sign language, subtitles and something very rare in this era of pop-cultural clatter: Moments of utter silence... Read more: deseretnews.com/article/ABC-Familys-Switched-at-Birth-seen-as-good-sign.html

Exclusive Interview With Deaf Actor Sean Berdy

VIDEO [CC] - Going Berdy exclusive interview with the ABC TV show "Switched At Birth" star Sean Berdy.

Going Berdy has a wonderful opportunity to interview Sean Berdy, who plays "Emmet Bledsoe" from "Switched at Birth". We were allowed to ask 5 questions, but we were only able to record as of part of the 2nd question.

WHY IS THERE NO SOUND? We removed the sound so as not to confuse those who are reading the subtitles. There was an interpreter, but not everything that Sean said was translated orally, so we had to redo the translation for completeness. The interpreter who helped in translating the second time around is Jennifer. I (Kat, GB Admin) also translated a little bit.

WHY SO FEW QUESTIONS? We were asked to limit our questions to 5 maximum. We can only pray that we will have yet another opportunity such as this to interview Sean again, but in a more laid back state.

CORRECTION: In the end credits, there was a typo for EvelinaGaina Entertainment. Please note that this is the correct spelling, and we sincerely apologize to EvelinaGaina Entertainment for the misspelling.
