Taylor Swift Meets Young Girl Who's Going Deaf

Deaf News: Australian girl Jorja Hope's wildest dreams came true on Saturday night when she met her idol Taylor Swift.

SYDNEY - The 12-year-old, from Maitland in the Hunter region, lived out a fairy tale on the weekend after the local community came together to help her meet the pop music superstar.

It all started when Jorja found out she has a condition that causes progressive, inner-ear hearing loss and would one day go Deaf.

The first thing she said when she got the prognosis was: "I won't be able to hear Taylor Swift sing".

Her twin sister Chloe was upset by the news and wanted to do something special for her sister, so she launched the social media campaign #HelpJorjaMeetTaylorSwiftSydney.

It went viral and eventually radio station, Nova 96.9, stepped in to get Jorja a "meet and greet" with the pop star.

The moment came to fruition at Swift's 1989 concert at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night - and it was everything Jorja had hoped for.

"She was very, very amazing and very pretty," Jorja said.

"I didn't expect her to be as tall as she was."

The girls took the pop star a gift - Mortels Ugg Boots from Thornton.

"She was very excited," Jojra said.

After the photo opportunity the twins enjoyed prime seats as Swift performed in front of the 76,000 strong crowd.

"It was very, very fun, we danced all night," she said. Sydney Morning Herald‎

Deaf Girl Uses ASL To Communicate With Pet Dog

VIDEO: Deaf News - Deaf Albuquerque girl uses American Sign Language to communicate with pet dog.

KRQE ALBUQUERQUE -- A Deaf New Mexico girl is using sign language to communicate with her pet dog. “She does everything with him,” said Neeva’s mom Chelsea Goff. While Neeva, 4, eats, her dog Baxter cleans up her crumbs. When it’s time to go outside and play, he is by her side.

“He is just always with her. If she’s asleep in bed, we can guarantee that he is in her room with her,” said Goff. Neeva and Baxter aren’t your average pair.

“We found out right away after she was born that she didn’t have hearing,” said Goff. Neeva goes to the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe. She communicates using sign language. “So really that is our primary language with her, therefore it’s her primary language with our animals,” said Goff.

Goff went to Animal Humane of New Mexico in August to find a dog that could fit in with her family, particularly one that had enough patience to care for Neeva.

“They had some animals that they thought would fit with our family and sure enough Baxter was one of them,” she said. “It was kind of that love at first sight kind of thing, so we brought him home and things have been great.”

Neeva has taught Baxter how to sit, stay and even go using sign language. Goff said Baxter listens most of the time especially if there is a treat involved.

“To watch them interact and really have active communication is really spectacular to watch,” said Goff. She also said the constant communication between the two has helped Neeva with her signing.

“In the Deaf community you get a sign name and it is usually assigned to you by another Deaf community member, so Neeva gave Baxter his sign name,” she said. Goff said the pair’s relationship is a silent one, yet powerful. Neeva’s family got Baxter for free from Animal Humane after another family who fell in love with him at the shelter, but couldn’t have him paid for his adoption fee. Source

Deaf Girl's Family Sues Cochlear Ear Implants For $7.25M

VIDEO: Louisville jury punishes company with $7.25 million verdict for selling Meade County girl defective ear implants that shocked her. An electrical short caused an 8-year-old girl to be thrown to the ground, vomiting and convulsing. The shocks happened two more times until the device was disconnected.

Courier-journal.com: LOUISVILLE, KY - Born Deaf, Breanna Sadler of Vine Grove, Ky., had a cochlear ear device implanted in her head in 2006, when she was 4 years old. Four years later, an electrical short from the device shocked her so violently that she was thrown to the ground, vomiting and convulsing.

After she was shocked two more times, the device had to be removed from her skull and replaced with a competitor’s model in an open-head surgery that took more than seven hours.

Breanna’s parents sued the manufacturer, Advance Bionics of Valencia, Calif., accusing the company of continuing to sell the device after executives knew it was leaking and defective. On Tuesday a U.S. District Court jury in Louisville agreed, awarding Breanna, now 11, and her parents $7.25 million in damages.

In the first of about 40 lawsuits filed nationally to go to trial, the jury said the company should pay $6.25 million in punitive damages alone for recklessly disregarding patient safety.

The Sadlers’ lawyers presented evidence that Advance Bionics executives delayed disclosing the defect so they could sell more devices and get more money when the company was sold. They “chose to ignore risks and focus on profits, ” the attorneys said in a brief.

About 4,000 of the devices have been implanted worldwide, and about 1,000 have failed, according to lead plaintiff’s counsel Tim Edwards, who estimated that dozens of patients in the Louisville area are “walking around with the devices in their head that have failed or will fail.” ...READ MORE: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20130418/NEWS10/304180041/Louisville-jury-awards-girl-7-2-million-hearing-aid-gave-her-shocks

Google Translate Helps Connect With Deaf People

Google Translate helps family connect with Deaf, adopted daughter.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ca. - You might use Google Translate to read a hard-to-find Manga comic book or to decipher an obscure recipe for authentic Polish blintzes. Or, like Phillip and Niki Smith in rural Mississippi, you could use it to rescue a Chinese orphan and fall in love at the same time.

Google is now doing a record billion translations on any given day, as much text as you'd find in 1 million books for everything from understanding school lunch menus to gathering national security intelligence. It translates in 65 languages, from Afrikaans to Yiddish, and can be used on websites, with speech recognition and as an app on mobile phones even if there is no connection.

While the technology is exponentially evolving, Google's translation guru Franz Och's face lit up when he heard that the Smiths and their new daughter, 14-year-old Guan Ya, are settling into their new lives together this month communicating almost exclusively through Google Translate.

"All day long I look at algorithms, algorithms and algorithms," he said. "It is so rewarding to hear that it is touching lives."

In the Smiths' case, it changed theirs forever.

The Smiths, who already have three children, first spotted Guan Ya less than a year ago when Niki Smith was looking at photos of hard to place orphans online, offering simple prayers for them one by one. With three children of her own, including a 3-year-old daughter adopted from China, she had no intention of adding to her family. ...READ MORE: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/08/google-translate_n_3029486.html

Therefore, in South Korea this story broke out and it spread like wildfire. There are various posts around in Korean forums that say that the viewer gets drawn to the girl's blue eyes, they say they can detect a hint of wraith and sadness within the eyes. Maybe the girl had died with so much sadness and anger that her spirit haunts the image, or maybe the image provokes sadness.

Can you tell it? But first at all, you have to click full screen of this video and do not move your eyes, just stare at the picture and you will notice that the picture is suddenly changing.
