Cochlear Implants - Have We Cured Deafness ?

VIDEO [CC] - "Have We Cured Deafness?" Research being studied on the ASL and CI users at the University of Washington.

SEATTLE -- Like much of America, I was raised having minimal to no interactions with the Deaf community and I didn’t give it a second thought. That is, until I took two years of American Sign Language (ASL) in high school and a full year of ASL at the University of Washington. While completing these classes, I discovered that there is a very strong and rich sense of community within Deaf Culture.

Over the years, I have found myself troubled by how a group of people so large (approximately 1 in 20 people are Deaf or Hard of Hearing) could play such a minor role in America with stereotypes continuously dampening their career aspects. When the opportunity presented itself to create a video aimed to educate hearing people about the Deaf person’s inequality, I took it.

I created the “Have We Cured Deafness?” video as part of a class project within my Master’s program (Communication Leadership) at the University of Washington. I designed this three-minute video to both set the stage for and be the first of a series that will further break down stereotypes that plague the Deaf community.

I hope you not only take the time to watch “Have We Cured Deafness?” but that you also do the due diligence of looking into Deaf culture and how we can improve our systems to better include these amazing people. As stated in the video, I recommend StartASL.com to learn more about Deaf culture.

Deaf Boy With A 'Bionic Ear'

VIDEO: 'Bionic ear' Deaf boy hear his family for the first time goes viral.

CNN - In many ways, Caiden Moran is an average five-year-old boy. Running around his front yard, climbing trees and playing with his brother, the only difference you might notice is the small device on the side of his head.

"Caiden was born, and before we left the hospital we did the newborn hearing screening. And he had failed, so we came back a week later, did the test again, failed again," said his mother Danielle Moran.

Caiden was born profoundly Deaf, with no cochleas an inner part of the ear that converts sound to nerve impulses and sends them to the brain. At the time doctors confirmed baby Caiden was deaf his father Tommy a member of the U.S. Navy had been deployed to Hawaii.

"I was sad," he said. "I didn't know anybody who was deaf, I didn't know sign language, I didn't know how to be a good dad and raise a Deaf child."

Because Caiden had no cochleas, a cochlear implant would be of no help. Instead, his parents learned sign language, assuming it would be the only way their son could ever communicate. Then, by chance, Danielle heard about a potential solution an auditory brainstem implant (ABI).

An ABI consists of a microphone and transmitter on the head, which convert sounds from the outside world into electrical signals. Those signals are transmitted to an internal receiver made up of electrodes, implanted on the brainstem. The auditory neurons are stimulated directly in the brain, bypassing the inner ear completely... Read more: http://cnn.com/2015/08/17/health/bionic-ear-auditory-brainstem-implant/index.html

Deaf Awareness: 'I Sign and I Live' Short Film

Click on the image above to watch the 32-minute film with subtitles.

If you watch this short film, then you guys should open your eyes and understand in 'I Sign and I Live' by Aidan Mack. The 32-minute film about a Deaf teacher and her Deaf niece. This film is related to cochlear implants and suppression of ASL. Thank you for watching.

The 32-minutes dramatic film, I Sign and I Live, is about Daisy, a Deaf teacher who faces prejudices and sterotypes in society at large. She faces a battle of wills in her own family with her sister over the matter the upbringing of her niece Dawn. Her hearing sister Kay makes decision to have her Deaf daughter, Dawn, fitted with cochlear implant. Daisy is appalled at the decision. It amounts to Kay rejecting Dawn's Deaf identity. Her sister is under the false impression that having any amount of hearing, no matter how limited and no matter the risk involved in obtaining it, is better than being Deaf and is better than experiencing life as a visual being.

Kay has always been prejudiced against Deaf people, though she was able to hide her prejudice until her decision to have Daisy implanted. Daisy is an educated professional and is hurt to discover Kay's ignorance. Kay is less educated and does not work outside the home. She doesn't believe that Deaf people can succeed professionally, even though she was witnessed Daisy's success and her accomplishments.

Daisy's niece is removed from her signing classroom and placed in an oral, auditory-oriented class. She is not allowed to sign with anyone. Dawn is not allowed to interact with Daisy at all. The story of the battle between Daisy and her sister ends with a tragic conclusion. Kay, along with the larger society, tries to suppress the use of sign language, but Deaf people like Daisy continue fighting on to sign - and live.

"Our First Weekend Filming" by Aidan Mack's blog.

To those of you, including newcomers, who are getting involved in participating and even working in the Deaf community through interpreting, teaching, and advocating, this is an opportunity to reciprocate and give back to the Deaf community for all it has provided to you, a knowledge of language, ASL and opportunity for jobs and to be involved with us in advocating for our own existence as Deaf beings. This is great opportunity for you to give back to the Deaf community, by donating to the financial support of this film, “I Sign and I Live.”

Cochlear Implants Are A Form Of Child Abuse

On the surface, cochlear implants sound like a promising medical solution to the problems surrounding hearing loss or total deafness. A cochlear implant uses existing nerves and electronic signals to override damaged auditory nerves, thus restoring a sense of hearing to the recipient. However, this technology has also caused serious divisions within the Deaf community concerning the hearing society's position on deafness in general. A number of members of the Deaf community choose to view their Deaf status as a subculture of society, in the same sense as a Hispanic person would embrace his or her Hispanic culture.

Deafness is not a handicap per se, but a shared experience which gives the Deaf community its unique cultural identity. To members of this Deaf subculture, cochlear implants are considered disrespectful and insulting, since the medical community views deafness as a handicap which must be treated or corrected: http://www.cochlearwar.com/myths_and_facts.html.

Certain factions of the Deaf community also believe a Deaf person's ability to live a full and meaningful life is not compromised by his or her deafness, so the suggestion that cochlear implants provide advantages over a Deaf lifestyle is shortsighted and insensitive.

Many Deaf people cope very well with their deafness, learning sign language and lip reading and adapting their work and home environments to accommodate their loss of hearing. Perhaps the cochlear implant is only for the MONEY as the dirty business? Cochlear Business Is Dirty Business! with captions.

Another controversy surrounding cochlear implants and the Deaf community is the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. Cochlear implantation involves major surgery in an area of the body filled with delicate nerves which control facial movements. One mistake during surgery could cause long-term facial paralysis, also and it is might be a risk to cochlear implant users where the thunderstorms approaching, Cochlear Implant User Struck By Lightning.

Cochlear implants can also destroy any remaining healthy auditory nerves, which means a Deaf person could lose all remnants of natural hearing which may have helped them adjust to a Deaf lifestyle. Cochlear implants require the recipient to undergo significant fine-tuning sessions, and success can vary widely from recipient to recipient. The controversy over cochlear implants often pits hearing parents against Deaf parents when it comes to raising their Deaf children in a hearing world. Many Deaf parents would prefer to raise their Deaf child in a Deaf culture, including the use of sign language and lip reading. Hearing parents who are not familiar with the Deaf community may opt for the cochlear implant surgery to correct their Deaf child's perceived handicap, Cochlear Implant Cruelty.

The result may be a Deaf child who can partially hear, or a hearing child with a Deaf cultural heritage. Either way, the child may face social ostracism from both communities if the parents do not consider the long-term effects of cochlear implant surgery. Not all members of Deaf community view cochlear implants as an unnecessary procedure, but hearing parents facing a difficult decision concerning a Deaf child may want to research both sides of the controversy before committing to cochlear implant surgery. What Is the Leading Cause of Child Abandonment?

History of Abandonment/Abuse - History tends to repeat itself and this is especially true of abuse and neglect patterns. Parents who experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment at the hands of someone when they were a child are more likely to repeat the pattern and abuse, neglect or abandon their own children. UNICEF estimates that 13 million children worldwide have been abandoned by both parents for various reasons, abuse and neglect among them. Watch the video in behavioral problems for not learning in sign language and oppression: Alone In A Hearing World.

Handicap/Illness of Child - A child born with a handicap, birth defect or chronic illness has a higher chance of being abandoned by their parents. Since infants and children are needy to begin with, parents living with a child with a chronic condition may not be able to cope with the increased demands of their child. Like parents who live in poverty, these parents believe their child will be better off without them and abandon these child to the foster care system or to live with other relatives.

Behavioral Problems - All children experience behavior problems as they grow and learn about the world around them. For some parents, their child's misbehavior is a source of extreme stress they are unable to handle. Other parents have children with extreme, even criminal, behavior that they are unable or unwilling to control. These children are at an increased risk of being removed from their parent's care or having their parents find alternative placement situations for them: Alone In A Hearing World.

STOP to abusive the childrens from the quacks from the profits!

Deaf Advocates responses on issue of the Advanced Bionics and Cochlear Americas are featured on the AG Bell Association front page as being their Circle Alliance. Cochlear Americas was in the news yesterday as the Dept of Justice announced it has been found guilty of kickbacks and must pay $880,000.

In March I had vlogged about Advanced Bionics being the top banner on the AG Bell Homepage. Advanced Bionics had been sued by a law firm which has a Deaf lawyer who has a CI but was representing cases of Deaf adults and children who had gotten shocks and other adverse reactions to failed CIs manufactured by Advanced Bionics due to moisture leaks and faulty CIs.

Since that time AG Bell has removed Advanced Bionics from its top banner. Great news. Perhaps the cochlear implant is only for the MONEY as the dirty business? as seen on Cochlear Business Is Dirty Business! with captioned.

When Haters Gonna Still Hate, Stop The Deaf Bullies

VIDEO: The Vlogsphere/Blogsphere are so obsessed with Sloan Churman's inspiring video where Sarah Churman hears her own voice for the first time after a lifetime of being Deaf as seen on 29 Year Old Deaf Woman Hears Herself For The First Time which still debating on the internet.

The several people most assumed and accusations that hearing impaired that did the comments under Sloan Churman's inspiring video for instance, The Damage Has Been Done! which is absolutely no proven by hearing impaired people that did this. What. 50K comments, majority of hearing impaired people attacking?.. 50K? oh puh-eeease.

Some time passed before I found an excellent example of the earlier point as similar of the videos.

An amazing and touching video of a young woman turning on her passionate message on Youtube whereas a simple, "Stop The Deaf Bullies Video" posted by Emily Darcy which she is implantable hearing as Sarah Churman would have been both sufficient and polite, many people chose to turn the video's comment section into their own personal political platform. Several of them did it in the most tactless way possible, offering up flat out insults and not even constructive points. Many people even attacked the beliefs of the videos, therefore, there's no difference between these the videos.

But then the sad thing is that you'll get your usual haters in the comment section as always by a bunch of idiots and then you have a bunch of ignorant like naysayers, haters and extremist people who can't even understand that Deaf/HH people can speaks out how they feels. You'll have to spend some time to find and read those nasty comments as you can seen on: Stop The Deaf Bullies -All Comments

The original video - Stop The Deaf Bullies.

There was a competition to make a video about the 'Deaf bullying' so I thought to make one because I'm also Deaf and just showing the haters out there what being Deaf is really like. Bullying the Deaf people is pathetic because it's not their fault for being Deaf. I hope all of you's understand this video cause basically of the Deaf people do get bullied for it, but look, we've got the most amazing life.

For your information, DYV posted this article, anyhow, When Haters Gonna Still Hate And The Clueless Ones Continue To Be Clueless known as blogger kokonutpundits realized and changed the story to cover it up as continued biased editing is bringing it and contributors into disrepute after we posted this issued, You can see kokonutpundits' ingorant comment on theholism's blog article "The Damage Has Been Done". Warning To Cochlear Implant Users

VIDEO [CC] - The storytelling of the cochlear implant system failures for the users.

If you travel consider which company you use. Your dreams could be destroyed. Caution I am making this video because some of you may be considering a Cochlear Implant for yourself or a child. As a Cochlear Implant Recipient, I think the following video is important for you to watch before making a decision on which implant to receive.

Bear with me as I give you a A brief history of my hearing loss. Born hearing and after a case of the measles when I was 10, I developed a progressive hearing loss which left profoundly deaf by the age of 20 I used sign language interpreters in college and at work. A TTY and other assistive listening devices. Eventually my aduilogist said nothing more can help there was no residual hearing left and I should consider a cochlear implant. I began the process of searching and selected Nucleus 24. The reason I went with this company was because of the World Wide Service they could provide. My surgery went fine, and I was activated and after three months of aural rehabilitation I was able to use the telephone. After 1 year my life was completely changed.

Sounds good so far huh? Here is the catch. Got my dream job working 10 months a year in Spain. Everything was going well until my Freedom Processor conked out. When you are traveling in a another country, you cannot access the Cochlear Store USA. I went to have my Freedom repaired locally here in Spain. GUESS WHAT. If you were not implanted in Spain, they say they cannot help you. OK GOT IT I can't get help here. I will buy a new processor from the USA and have it shipped to Spain. Again, my audiologist coordinated everything maped it and shipped it to me in Spain. IT WAS STOPPED in Madrid by customs,,,, why? Because only one company in Spain can provide a processor. It gets even more interesting. I asked how much a processor was to buy in Spain. I was told 11,000 USD. However from the USD it was only 6,000 USD. The company in Spain suggested I fly to the United States if I wanted service.

It has been over a month since I have had a processor that will allow me to do the work that I have dreamed of doing. Consider if you ever wanted to travel, or maybe your child might want to be a foreign exchange student ,, think of all the dreams and possibilities that could suddenly be taken away from you. I am at a point now where I am about to lose everything I have worked so hard to achieve. Don't let this happen to your child or loved one.
