Deaf communities are ignored by government and Deaf unemployment is very high. The percent of unemployment (80%) seems closer to accurate for anyone who born Deaf but it should be lower as 70%.

Deaf unemployment is very complicated - they don't count anyone who born Deaf or HoH that goes through the Deaf Education, but late deafened with full oral language have better chance to getting hired, especially if they have very good benefit with cochlear implants or hearing aids and don't use VR service.

Deaf Students Protest Coach’s Replacement

EXCLUSIVE California School for the Deaf students protest coach’s replacement.

RIVERSIDE, CA - At least 90 teenagers at California School for the Deaf, Riverside, left morning classes Thursday, Oct. 31, to protest the replacement of the high school boys’ basketball coach.

Students demonstrated outside the gym over what they said was the forced resignation of coach Jeremias Valencia and the hiring of former coach David Hamilton.

“We don’t want him to be our coach,” 11th grader Miranda Murphy wrote. “We’re trying to get Jeremias back.”

The California Department of Education issued a statement from Riverside campus Superintendent Mal Grossinger.

“I can appreciate that the students in question feel strongly about who serves as their basketball coach, but this is ultimately a personnel decision that had to be made by administrators,” Grossinger said. “We will continue to encourage the students to return to class and discuss more constructive ways to share their views.”

Students had painted a banner saying “We want Coach V. back” and hung it on the chain link fence that faces Arlington Avenue along with other signs protesting the coach’s being replaced. ... Read more: http://blog.pe.com/high-schools/2013/10/31/riverside-deaf-students-protest-coachs-replacement/

Deaf School Treats Students As Slaves

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: India government school teacher doing massage by Deaf student.

AKOLA - The Deaf community and parents in India outraged when the video leaking into the public of a government school teacher forcing student to doing massage which it was not a part of the education in school.

The teacher, Shital Avchar, working at a government run school for Deaf students, was also found guilty of taking nap in the classroom during school hours and harassing the pupils. Slavery are incompatible and it was part of a slavery re-enactment that discriminate to the students - some parents said crossed the line.

How dare teachers doing that to the students and call it an educational experience? Obviously this school district has taken education to a level it never needed to go to. Teaching children how to slavery and act inappropriately is never the job of a teachers.

Parents Of Deaf Children Encouraged To Learn Sign Language

KENYA - Parents of Deaf children need to learn sign language in order to communicate with their children.

This is the proposal by the undugu society of Kenya, who maintain that most Deaf children, especially those from poor backgrounds, live most of their formative years in silence because both their parents and the community at large cannot communicate with them.

The society also faulted the education system for not being accommodative enough to enable effective learning by Deaf children.

Deaf Customers Sue Starbucks Over Mocking

Deaf customers sue Starbucks, claim discrimination. Starbucks employees allegedly laughed at speech of hearing impaired customers in New York City.

NEW YORK CITY - Twelve Deaf Starbucks customers in New York City have filed a lawsuit against the Seattle-based coffee company, claiming discrimination. Starbucks employees allegedly mocked the customers multiple times over the course of several years, and once called the police on a monthly meeting of Deaf people.

"Cruel Employees" at two different Manhattan Starbucks mocked Deaf customers and refused to serve them, a stunning new lawsuit says.

"They were ridiculed, laughed at and told they had to leave Starbucks," said lawyer Eric Baum, who's suing on behalf of a dozen Deaf customers.

Jamie Riley, a spokeswoman for the mega-popular coffee chain, said they were aware of the allegations and were investigating them. "Discrimination of any kind is unacceptable at Starbucks," she said.

The suit says one incident took place at a Starbucks at 424 Park Ave. South in August 2012, when customer Alan Roth said a barista laughed when he placed his order, telling him he "sounded funny."

She "asked him to continually repeat himself as she laughed harder each time," and she was soon laughing "hysterically," the suit says.

When Roth demanded to speak to a manager, the employee started screaming obscenities at him and had to be restrained by other Starbucks staff, the suit says. Another employee told Roth to leave and never come back, the suit says.

Roth said he had "never before been so blatantly and maliciously been discriminated against."

The suit says Deaf customers also were forced to leave and had the cops called on them another time at the 13-25 Astor Place location, which had been chosen as the monthly gathering spot for an informal "Deaf Chat Coffee" social group. 'Sign Language is Strength' Demonstration in Berlin

VIDEO [International Sign] - On 14 June 2013 held in Berlin a demo action sign language and rally. About 10,000 Deaf people protested in Berlin for equal rights and participation in the German society at by the Federal Parliament (Reichstag building). Deaf Germans call on politicians to implement all necessary accessibility! Germans demand the full recognition, German sign language in all areas.

In Berlin, on 14 June 2013 about 10,000 mostly Deaf people from all over the West for your rights and accessibility demonstrated by sign language. The demonstration route ran from the Reichstag to the vicinity of Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse. Mel Riot reported.

25 years ago, on 17 June 1988 the European Parliament decided that the respective national sign language should be recognized as full-fledged language in all Member States of the European Community. Due to the prolonged struggle of the Deaf community and the support of many politicians the respective sign language is now recognized in most countries of the European Union and the Deaf fellow citizens have the right of access to information in their native language. However, there are still countries where the national sign language is not recognized, and in Germany there are still many situations in which Deaf people, despite the recognition of sign language, equal access to institutions of public life is denied.

With the demonstration of "action sign language" grab those affected exactly this topic, and want to show that the German sign language even though she is 11 years officially recognized in Germany, is not yet considered in all aspects as a matter of course. Deaf people encounter still many barriers and there are big differences in quality of the services for hearing-impaired people.

An example of this is the education in which the foundation for the further development opportunities and hard of hearing children is fixed. For the school, it is very important for children and young people that they are taught by teachers who are their sign language skills at a sufficiently high level. This can only ensure the fewest educational institutions so far unfortunately. Fact: Deaf children and young people are still not self-evident taught sign language.

The Walking Deaf 14.06.2013 Demonstration in Berlin, Germany.

Nor is self-evident in the pre-school education, access to sign language and a bilingual early intervention.

Even in the areas of communication and information access in which people with hearing impairments still bump into barriers, must the quality of sign language interpreters, the selection of personnel in institutions and agencies that are working for hearing-impaired people, saved and checked in the best case by native speakers are. Only in this way can be guaranteed that the barriers are broken down and Deaf people can live in an inclusive society. More Informations at http://aktion.gehoerlosen-bund.de

Arizona Deaf Schools: Students Protest, Demand Action

VIDEO: Arizona probes accusation of conflicts at Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind, Superintendent, board president focus of protests, complaints.

TUCSON, AZ. - Two state agencies are investigating the superintendent and board president of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind for potential conflicts of interest and excessive travel expenses.

Superintendent Robert Hill and ASDB Board President Bernhardt Jones also have been the focus of multiple protests at school's two main campuses in Tucson and Phoenix over the last two weeks. Students, parents and former employees have called for the two to resign because of a lack of leadership and poor communication with the staff.

Among the concerns:

• Possible conflicts of interest: Hill and Jones have a private business relationship outside their ASDB positions. Jones is the director of TASK12, which administers the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment for a $310 testing fee. Hill is listed as a TASK12 local test administrator at classroominterpreting.org. Neither Hill nor Jones disclosed their roles with TASK12 to ASDB, its board of directors or the state. ...READ MORE: http://azstarnet.com/news/arizona-probes-accusation-of-conflicts-at-asdb/article_e301835a-402d-53fb-b9fa-66e87c65dfe4.html

Pigs, goats snatched from classrooms: Deaf students protest, demand action.

Outrage swirling at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. One administrator on leave. Another fired. And now students say even their animals are gone.

Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind Board of Directors: Acknowledge the vote of "No Confidence" in Superintendent Robert Hill - Five years ago, parents, staff, and community members gathered to ensure that Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind's campuses were truly accessible to American Sign Language (ASL) for the students and staff as well as fostering positive changes in the curriculum in order to advance deaf education.

Today, we find that our students' education is now at risk because of haphazard administrative decisions and questionable conduct by Superintendent Robert Hill, including several allegations of discriminatory conduct in regards to staff (female/sexual) and disability (Deaf).

Nearly 50 ASDB staff members have already personally signed the following statement: We, the members of the ASDB community including staff, parents, alumni, and friends, sign this petition as a Vote of No Confidence in Robert Hill's continued service as Superintendent of ASDB.

Calling The ASL Community: Remove Karl White

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Calling the ASL Community.

Be toxic may stop spread of audism! Suggest to watch this video and do share to Deaf community only if you love American Sign Language!

As State Director of Special Education and the person who gathered nominations for the Application Selection/Screening Committee members, it is important that I let you know there are two problems.

There is only one Deaf person on this committee. This is unacceptable. Deaf people are heavily invested in USDB and should have a majority position on any committee discussing it.

One of the committee members, Karl White, is seen, by the Deaf Community and also by professionals who study and teach about Language Acquisition, Brain Development, and Deaf Culture, as someone who is very lacking in being able to help decide interview questions for the upcoming USDB Supt candidates.

His past interactions have been disrespectful towards Deaf professionals and those knowledgeable about Deaf Education. This has been evident at EHDI conferences and other NCHAM lectures. He has a known reputation for disregarding Deaf input. He has been oppressive and patronizing to Deaf adults and the Deaf Community. I feel he is someone who does not understand what is critical to understand about Deaf Education and the skills/talents needed in the next USDB Supt. I would petition you and those who have made this appointment to please remove Karl White from this committee. He is unacceptable.

For Those Who Don't Understand What It's Like To Be Deaf

VIDEO: For those who don't understand what it's like to be Deaf in American Sign Language.

For people who don't understand ASL here is a written translation:

Hello my name is Leeza.

Hello my name is Joshua.

Leeza: Joshua and I are from California School for the Deaf in Fremont.

Joshua: We are here to talk about your proposal HB1367 - that proposal talks about moving Outreach out from Indiana School for the Deaf and ISD has to pay for it.

Leeza: I'll share one quotation, "History does not repeat itself", Foraker Act in 1900...

Joshua: Long time ago in 1900 Puerto Rico became a territory of America. The president of United States got to pick their president. How is that become a problem? Puerto Ricans didn't get a president that understood their environment, culture, and rights.

How we are having the same problem with the board that Indiana government choose (All the people in ISD board is not the people we suggested.) - they made the decision that will hurt Indiana School for the Deaf. We, Deaf people, feels like you are not respecting our rights as a Deaf citizen of United States.

Leeza: Now look at ISD's Board, they are proposing to pull Outreach out from Indiana School for the Deaf and put it to someplace else and forcing ISD to pay for it. Outreach is very important for us. It's the place where parents with Deaf children will learn about children's choices - cochlear implant(s), ASL, oral methods, and many more choices. Of course ISD want to play the big part in supporting with their children's future.

We also want to show them how ASL is our big success for Deaf people. Again, we Deaf citizens feels like we don't have our right of speech, based on my data: about 400 people send letters explaining why this should be not happening. While another 30 letter supports this proposal. Now, we want you to think about your decision. We, Deaf citizens of United States, think the right decision will be keeping the outreach in ISD.

Please support our cause and go to http://www.change.org/petitions/oppose-hb-1367 and sign our petition.

NBC Discriminates Deaf Community ?

INDIANAPOLIS - At Super Bowl XLVI, The NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique performed the anthem America the Beautiful in American sign language, so very disappointed that Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV the national broadcast, which is not the first time the NBC has done it at major event. "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson rendition of the national anthem unsurprisingly finished her version clocked in at one minute, 34 second less time than Rachel Mazique's lengthy one minute, 54 second version of the song.

The National Association for the Deaf announced that the NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, will perform the national anthem and America the Beautiful in American sign language (ASL) at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012. The NAD in partnership with PepsiCo worked closely with the National Football League to ensure that America's songs would be delivered in ASL at the Super Bowl. The NAD hopes that the national broadcast will include the signed performance. Actually ironic video showed Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV! very typical examples.

Rachel Mazique unseen on television at Super Bowl.

Numerous Deaf people of the community in the United States very disappointed with the NBC didn't show Rachel Mazique signing the National Anthem on the Super Bowl as seen on the video. Must be a more reason to hate it. what a shame! no camera was focused on her. NBC didn't even try to get Rachel Mazique on TV. Is NBC anti-deaf? Is AG Bell, and HB 1367 in Indiana has been agreement with the NBC to avoids the signed performance on the national broadcast? The NAD and PepsiCo typically meaning of failing cooperation with the NBC/NFL as well? The Deaf community wondering what the NAD are working with? or an epic fail? Deaf people hopefully the NAD give an explanation why does Rachel Mazique isn't on TV after all...

Update: Statements from Ms. Rachel Mazique's Facebook Page. She was posted at FB:

"To my family, friends, fans, supporters: Thank you for rooting for me. I'm as disappointed as you are that American Sign Language gained no exposure. ASL was also not shown on the JumboTron inside the stadium as far as I know. I have poor quality videos of me signing...blurry...signs and face cut off at some points.. shaky film because my mom was being pushed around on the sidelines...not sure if they are worth posting.."

"I am so sorry you didn't get the chance to see me on TV and I thank you all for your support and excitement. I'm re-posting this from someone's comment on my status: "Post your videos! And I got this off someone else's status: Found this email address in case you are interested in writing NBC regarding Rachel Mazique not being shown in the pre-game: nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com." Some are also tweeting to NBC. If enough people in the general public express their disappointment, next year's performer should get air time." Indiana HB 1367 - #LiesAGBellToldMyParents

VIDEO: Indiana HB 1367 -  #LiesAGBellToldMyParents... Many Deaf survivors of the Alexander Graham Bell Association. We will never forget.

Please not support Indiana HB 1367. That's conflict of interest since State House Rep Noe is on the Board of ISD (Indiana School for the Deaf) did wrote her own House Bill called "Indiana HB 13167" without checking and talking with Deaf Indiana community and ISD Alumnians. Shame on State Rep Cindy Noe!
