How ASL Deafies Treat The Hearing Impaired

VIDEO [CC] - "You Neutral" a video clip in how ASL Deafies treat the hearing impaired.

If you watch the 2½ minute vignette of "Amy" in this video, you'll see it expresses the frustration we hearing impaired face, as we are caught "in between" the "hearing" and the "ASL Deafie" worlds...

"You Neutral" The Original Video - Subtitled Version - "You Neutral?" - As Deaf and hard-of-hearing people roll forth in life, they experience much. And yet, many prefer to stay neutral.

This video shows the clear contrast between such attitudes and what's going on. The depicted situations in this video are not surprising for Deaf people - they see them as ordinary, every-day events.

For Those Who Don't Understand What It's Like To Be Deaf

VIDEO: For those who don't understand what it's like to be Deaf in American Sign Language.

For people who don't understand ASL here is a written translation:

Hello my name is Leeza.

Hello my name is Joshua.

Leeza: Joshua and I are from California School for the Deaf in Fremont.

Joshua: We are here to talk about your proposal HB1367 - that proposal talks about moving Outreach out from Indiana School for the Deaf and ISD has to pay for it.

Leeza: I'll share one quotation, "History does not repeat itself", Foraker Act in 1900...

Joshua: Long time ago in 1900 Puerto Rico became a territory of America. The president of United States got to pick their president. How is that become a problem? Puerto Ricans didn't get a president that understood their environment, culture, and rights.

How we are having the same problem with the board that Indiana government choose (All the people in ISD board is not the people we suggested.) - they made the decision that will hurt Indiana School for the Deaf. We, Deaf people, feels like you are not respecting our rights as a Deaf citizen of United States.

Leeza: Now look at ISD's Board, they are proposing to pull Outreach out from Indiana School for the Deaf and put it to someplace else and forcing ISD to pay for it. Outreach is very important for us. It's the place where parents with Deaf children will learn about children's choices - cochlear implant(s), ASL, oral methods, and many more choices. Of course ISD want to play the big part in supporting with their children's future.

We also want to show them how ASL is our big success for Deaf people. Again, we Deaf citizens feels like we don't have our right of speech, based on my data: about 400 people send letters explaining why this should be not happening. While another 30 letter supports this proposal. Now, we want you to think about your decision. We, Deaf citizens of United States, think the right decision will be keeping the outreach in ISD.

Please support our cause and go to http://www.change.org/petitions/oppose-hb-1367 and sign our petition.

NBC Discriminates Deaf Community ?

INDIANAPOLIS - At Super Bowl XLVI, The NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique performed the anthem America the Beautiful in American sign language, so very disappointed that Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV the national broadcast, which is not the first time the NBC has done it at major event. "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson rendition of the national anthem unsurprisingly finished her version clocked in at one minute, 34 second less time than Rachel Mazique's lengthy one minute, 54 second version of the song.

The National Association for the Deaf announced that the NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, will perform the national anthem and America the Beautiful in American sign language (ASL) at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012. The NAD in partnership with PepsiCo worked closely with the National Football League to ensure that America's songs would be delivered in ASL at the Super Bowl. The NAD hopes that the national broadcast will include the signed performance. Actually ironic video showed Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV! very typical examples.

Rachel Mazique unseen on television at Super Bowl.

Numerous Deaf people of the community in the United States very disappointed with the NBC didn't show Rachel Mazique signing the National Anthem on the Super Bowl as seen on the video. Must be a more reason to hate it. what a shame! no camera was focused on her. NBC didn't even try to get Rachel Mazique on TV. Is NBC anti-deaf? Is AG Bell, and HB 1367 in Indiana has been agreement with the NBC to avoids the signed performance on the national broadcast? The NAD and PepsiCo typically meaning of failing cooperation with the NBC/NFL as well? The Deaf community wondering what the NAD are working with? or an epic fail? Deaf people hopefully the NAD give an explanation why does Rachel Mazique isn't on TV after all...

Update: Statements from Ms. Rachel Mazique's Facebook Page. She was posted at FB:

"To my family, friends, fans, supporters: Thank you for rooting for me. I'm as disappointed as you are that American Sign Language gained no exposure. ASL was also not shown on the JumboTron inside the stadium as far as I know. I have poor quality videos of me signing...blurry...signs and face cut off at some points.. shaky film because my mom was being pushed around on the sidelines...not sure if they are worth posting.."

"I am so sorry you didn't get the chance to see me on TV and I thank you all for your support and excitement. I'm re-posting this from someone's comment on my status: "Post your videos! And I got this off someone else's status: Found this email address in case you are interested in writing NBC regarding Rachel Mazique not being shown in the pre-game: nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com." Some are also tweeting to NBC. If enough people in the general public express their disappointment, next year's performer should get air time." Deaf Awareness: 'I Sign and I Live' Short Film

Click on the image above to watch the 32-minute film with subtitles.

If you watch this short film, then you guys should open your eyes and understand in 'I Sign and I Live' by Aidan Mack. The 32-minute film about a Deaf teacher and her Deaf niece. This film is related to cochlear implants and suppression of ASL. Thank you for watching.

The 32-minutes dramatic film, I Sign and I Live, is about Daisy, a Deaf teacher who faces prejudices and sterotypes in society at large. She faces a battle of wills in her own family with her sister over the matter the upbringing of her niece Dawn. Her hearing sister Kay makes decision to have her Deaf daughter, Dawn, fitted with cochlear implant. Daisy is appalled at the decision. It amounts to Kay rejecting Dawn's Deaf identity. Her sister is under the false impression that having any amount of hearing, no matter how limited and no matter the risk involved in obtaining it, is better than being Deaf and is better than experiencing life as a visual being.

Kay has always been prejudiced against Deaf people, though she was able to hide her prejudice until her decision to have Daisy implanted. Daisy is an educated professional and is hurt to discover Kay's ignorance. Kay is less educated and does not work outside the home. She doesn't believe that Deaf people can succeed professionally, even though she was witnessed Daisy's success and her accomplishments.

Daisy's niece is removed from her signing classroom and placed in an oral, auditory-oriented class. She is not allowed to sign with anyone. Dawn is not allowed to interact with Daisy at all. The story of the battle between Daisy and her sister ends with a tragic conclusion. Kay, along with the larger society, tries to suppress the use of sign language, but Deaf people like Daisy continue fighting on to sign - and live.

"Our First Weekend Filming" by Aidan Mack's blog.

To those of you, including newcomers, who are getting involved in participating and even working in the Deaf community through interpreting, teaching, and advocating, this is an opportunity to reciprocate and give back to the Deaf community for all it has provided to you, a knowledge of language, ASL and opportunity for jobs and to be involved with us in advocating for our own existence as Deaf beings. This is great opportunity for you to give back to the Deaf community, by donating to the financial support of this film, “I Sign and I Live.”

Joey Bell Jr: The Next Deaf UFC Fighter ?

Joey Bell Jr: Fighter's video profile 'Being Tough Is Not Enough'.

WINDSOR, Canada - Joe Bell Jr is my childhood and best friend of 23 years. Growing up with him and his family who are Deaf was always a bowl of cherries and we always had a great time.

We used to workout together before but I stopped a few years ago and he continued as his goal was to be a bodybuilder but he realized the risk of abusing his body with steroids - he never took them and the amount of working out to be done he started to train MMA in the last 2 years or so after Matt Hamill inspired him.

He also met him as well and said he was a great guy with a big heart. So, he asked me to go to the gym with him to make a video profile for him to gain him some exposure as we all know YouTube is the place to be where dreams can come true.

I am also promoting Mady's Karate school as it was only fair as Albert allowed me to video Joe and his gym so if you are from the Windsor area and are interested in MMA, judo, karate you name it, Mady's is definitely the place to go. After all he was the 1st Canadian to be inducted into the Karate Hall of Fame. Sources by Scott Kerr.

Thanks for watching the video and hope you enjoyed it as well as I enjoyed shooting and editing it.

ABC Family's 'Switched at Birth' Seen As Good Sign

WALNUT CREEK, CA. - Olivia Stein, a 17-year-old student at California School for the Deaf in Fremont, Calif., can probably count on one hand how many times she has seen someone like herself beaming from a television screen.

"Switched at Birth" doesn't focus solely on deafness the soapy twists and turns cover a wide terrain. But it does explore several pertinent Deaf issues, including communication and societal barriers, speech therapy and the debate over cochlear implants.

It also makes extensive use of sign language, subtitles and something very rare in this era of pop-cultural clatter: Moments of utter silence... Read more: deseretnews.com/article/ABC-Familys-Switched-at-Birth-seen-as-good-sign.html
